London-based designer JW Anderson does girly modernist for Spring/Summer 2013 collection

JW Anderson

Ditching a sole androgynous style in design, JW Anderson (short for Jonathan William Anderson) has engineered  his signature style with a huge influx of girly formula for his Spring/Summer 2013 collection, which was showcased at London Fashion Week 2013.

Perhaps it’s the 1920s flapper influences, which are all the rage this season. Or perhaps it’s just the habit of doing a revival of the oldies, just because we can’t get enough of it. We can really see the retro elements coming together in almost all his designs, from frilled trimmings along the asymmetrical, curved hemline of his skirts, to the time-appropriate above-knee-skimming dresses, and even to the somewhat trumpet-silhouette shorts.

As if that isn’t enough, the baubles around the necks just reminds me of strings of pearl necklaces, hold up in a choker style in pearly-clean white and the occasional pops of pale grey. Even the frilly clutches have me thinking of sweet, dainty styles with refined and graceful patterns that have so endeared the hearts of many women of those times.

You see, what makes this collection works really boils down to the odd-yet-successful combination of sportswear elements in miniscule portions, with the subtle inclination to the athletic cut in lightweight cotton dresses, keeping in tune with the whole JW Anderson’s signature masculine/feminine trademark style.

Safe for the equally sporty albeit space-like patent boots, which inject a little bit of that edge, I see no reason why any girl won’t fall in love with his collection.

After all, this is one collection that even Grace Kelly would find absolutely refreshing.

Here are some of our top picks from the collection (with prices):

J. W. Anderson printed T-shirt, $390_EDITEDIs that a painting? Because it sure looks like one.

Talk about imagery illusion, this tee seriously does it all. Especially for those who just love a perfect face on a tee, with beautiful cheekbones or just those brilliant sculptured features, this one would fit you to a T… I mean, tee.

J. W. Anderson floral printed cotton top, $690_EDITED

Big in the season is also the trend on prints. Because ultimately, it is always patterned over plain, what more an entra unique mini-floral printed one with flaps inclusive, plus an interesting shoulder details that have the patterns starting only below the shoulder point, with an entire row of clothed buttons.

We can almost foresee this as a definition of a conversation-starter, where it can literally start any ball rolling in an event, during work, or just in everyday conversations. We adore this for how easily this top can be matched too, with pencil skirts, smart fitted pants, or just a flare trumpet pants for that modern flapper look.

J. W. Anderson wool pants with outer skirt flap, $1,560_EDITED

The flapper style in what appears to be more akin to a Samurai. We like it for this extra bit of uniqueness – pants + skirt! How ingenious!

J. W. Anderson wool flapper shorts, $1,230_EDITED

But of course, the flapper shorts that we so raved about! I’m sure with this in your wardrobe, you can totally forget all about your plain normal shorts, because life is just more exciting with that extra frills, no?
